Web Building Series Knowledge 101 | Browser Caching

Browser Caching

Everytime you visit a website, your Browser have to download all the webfiles so you can property view the page you’re visiting. So all of the HTML, Javascript, and images are items that are downloadable. It’s a “behind the scenes” process that’s very important. Some websites only have small amounts of information to download, while others have rich images, video, CSS, and javascripts that need to load so you can enjoy the full experience of the site. Norman Smith Enterprises Inc. is an example of a larger website that have downloadable content on it. If you are experiencing the issue of a slow loading website there are two important issues you might have to address.

1st Issue

  1. Larger files (like High Res Photos) take a long time to load, especially on cell phones and other mobile devices and slow internet connections.

2nd Issue

 2. Each file that you need to load your webpage makes a separate request to the server which also slows down the load time of your webpage.

Browser caching can help by storing some of these files locally in the user’s browser. It can dramatically speed up the time it takes for your website to load. Your visitors will experience a normal load time on their first visit. However when they revisit your site their browser will save some of the files locally,

Why is it important?

The main reason why browser caching is important is because it reduces the load on your web server, which ultimately reduces the load time for your users. If you are using WordPress you can easily initiate browser caching by installing the following plugins:

WP Rocket is a caching and performance optimization plugin to improve the loading speed of WordPress websites. You can install and configure WP Rocket in less than 3 minutes

W3 Total Cache

W3 Total Cache improves the user experience of your site by improving your server performance, caching every aspect of your site, reducing the download times and providing transparent content delivery network (CDN) integration.
